Will and Probate Records 1858-1888 (Part 1)

****UPDATED WITH LINKS TO INDIVIDUAL WILLS ON APRIL 2, 2016****

See Other "Will" Posts: Part 2, Part 3 - Under Construction

Hello Everyone,

I thought I would make a general entry about the available will and probate records that I have found online (please let me know if there are others so that the information can be shared).

On the FamilySearch.org site, they have made images from the "Ireland, Calendar of Wills and Administrations, 1858-1920" public.  These records, when filtered for the location of Clare, provides over 7,000 results: LINK.  Of course, I'm not listing them all here, but if you are interested you can add additional filters to the search which may assist with locating records on your family.  Please keep in mind, that the spellings of surnames come in a variety of forms, so make sure you try all of the possibilities you can come up with...  The record I was looking for came up under the name Larner, not Lardner.

-----

Below are the list of searches for known names associated with the surname Lardner, whose Letters of Adminstration and wills were filed and probated in Limerick between 1858-1888.

Please note, I didn't look for the multitude of variations possible for most of them, these are single searches on the most common form of the names unless otherwise noted.  If probate of the will was completed in Limerick and filed between 1858-1888, there is a possibility that you may be able to get a microfilm copy (see the microfilm links at the end of this post):

Sullivan's of Dunsallagh / Doonsallagh, Clare

Hello everyone!  In this entry I thought I would provide a possible little timeline breakdown of the Sullivans from Dunsallagh/Doonsallagh area based upon the residence of the baptism sponsors for the first two Lardner children in my family in 1840 and 1841.

Please be advised that the two forms of the townland name will be used interchangeably depending how the record in question spells the location.

---------------------
Per Google maps, it appears that Dunsallagh/Doonsallagh is relatively close to Cloonlaheen West where my Lardner family was from:

In the Tithe Applotment records for the year 1833, there are two Sullivan listed as living in Dunsallagh: John Sullivan and Tim Sullivan.  A short distance away, to the south, there is also listed a Lawrence Sullivan who is listed as residing in Killarnon (aka Killernan).

On the Clare Library's website there is a list of the 1834, "Recapitulated Tithe Applotment Book for the Parish of Kilmurry Ibrickan," where a John and Tim Sullivan are listed in Doonsallagh.

The next appearances in Dunsallagh come with my family's baptism sponsorships of  Patrick O'Sullivan in 1840 and then Peter and Mary Sullivan in 1841.

In the 1854/55 the Griffith Valuation records, a person can still find Sullivans in Doonsallagh and surrounding locations.  In fact a Peter Sullivan is still listed there, this time in Doonsallagh West more specifically.

Looking at the 1901 Irish Census a Sullivan family is shown as residing in Doonsallagh East, the head of this family of seven is Thady Sullivan. Included along side him in this group is his mother, the widow, Mary Sullivan.  It is possible that the Mary Sullivan is the wife of the aforementioned, Peter Sullivan, who together they could have been the couple from Dunsallagh that were recorded as sponsors of John Lardner.  At the approximate age of 80, Mary would have been in her early twenties when John was born.

Also listed in the 1901 Census is two O'Sullivan children, Norah and Thomas, who were living with their uncle Thomas Burke and their cousins in Doonsallagh East.

Ten years later, the 1911 Irish Census shows another Sullivan family of seven in Doonsallagh East, this time headed by a Timothy Sullivan (aka Thady?, his age and his wife Anne's age correspond to the 1901 census).
---------------------

If anyone has any connection to this Sullivan family let me know!  It would be interesting to see if we can't piece together how this branch of Sullivans are connected to the Lardners.

Jessica

Baptism Registry of James Lardner and Siblings.

Wooo hooo!  Quick update! I finally had a chance to look at the FHL microfilmed copy of the parochial registers for Kilmurry-Ibricken!

I must say that the results of my first foray with the records revealed a couple of interesting things.  First and foremost, I couldn't find any notation of James Lardner Sr and Bridget Sullivan in the registers until the baptism of my 2x great-grand father, James, in 1840.  The manuscripts themselves begin in April of 1839 and are therefore missing a couple of months from the first half of the year.  Secondly, when I compared the information that I already had to the information from the microfilm, I found some previously unknown facts...

----------
Known information:

  • Baptism: 2nd January, 1840
  • Child: James Lardner
  • Parents: James Lardner & Bridget O'Sullivan of Powerstown
  • Sponsors: Patrick O'Sullivan & Susan McInerey
-----

Information gathered from the microfilm (Register of Baptisms, Volume 1, page 40):

  • Baptism: 2nd January, 1840
  • Child: James Lardner
  • Parents: James Lardner & Bridget O'Sullivan of Powerstown
  • Sponsors: Patrick O'Sullivan of Dunsallagh in the parish of Miltown & Susan McInerey of Powerstown
  • Minister: E. P. Barry

----------

Operating on the idea that individuals with the same surname, who are listed on the baptism records as sponsors/witnesses, may be relations to the family....the fact that the microfilm offers a location of a O'Sullivan sponsor is incredibly exciting!

Also found on the film was a location for the sponsors of James' brother John, they were Peter and Mary Sullivan of Dunsallagh.  Unfortunately, there was no location information listed for the only other person that could have possibly have been a relative, Margaret Lardner, she was the sponsor of Patrick Lardner.

Moral of the story kids, go back the original source if possible (or a close facsimile), who knows what could be waiting for you!

Jessica

Sullivan (O'Sullivan) Name in County Clare - Tithe Applotments and Landed Estate Files

Hello Everyone!  I'm back after a vacation break with information on the Sullivan half of my Lardner familial equation.

As a refresher, my 3x great-grandfather was James Lardner and his first wife (and my 3x great-grandmother) was Bridget Sullivan/O'Sullivan.  Bridget died some time after 1850 and the birth of her last child, Ellen.

I have very little information to go on for my Sullivan branch other than Bridget's name and the possibility that she is related to a couple of her children's baptism sponsors: one of James Lardner's (2x great-grandfather) sponsors was Patrick O'Sullivan and John Lardner's sponsors were Peter and Mary Sullivan.  As a result, I did a search in the Tithe Applotment and Landed Estate record index to see if by chance there were any results...and boy were there.  There is a vast difference in the amount of Sullivans vs. Lardners in County Clare during the that time period.

Please follow the hyper-linked titles to see the entire list of results, as below I have only listed those entries where the physical locations of the individuals were relatively close to the Lardner family of Cloonlaheen West.

Lardner Descendants in the United States?

Since my last post, I have been searching for my various aunts and uncles that are believed to have emigrated to other countries, but have so far come up with nothing... But, in the mean time I have come across information on other possible Lardner descendants in the United States and have listed the individuals below and updated their corresponding family pages.  To get to the family pages just click on the hyper-linked parents names.

If you are in anyway related to these individuals, please leave a quick comment on one of the pages!

Until Later,
Jessica
-----------------------------------------------

Parents:
Nora Lardner and Michael O'Connell
  • Bryan O'Connell was a police officer, born in County Clare in 1886, he was married Mary Mcgowan/Mcgouan and died in Chicago, IL in 1940 (Death Record).
    • The year of birth of this Bryan matches to the record found in the Irish index, but the month and day is different.  It is possible that the date listed in the Irish index is the baptism date and not the actual date of birth as indicated in the U.S. record.  A review of the Irish civil and church records would be needed to verify what date the Irish records are providing.
  • Anna O'Connell was born in 1872, was married James J. Waldron and lived in Waukegan, IL, she later died in 1943 in Chicago, IL (Death Record).
    • As with Bryan listed above, the year of birth matches, but the month and day are different.  A review of the Irish civil and church records would be needed to verify what date the Irish records are providing.
  • Thomas O'Connell married Nellie C. Benham in 1890 in Cadillac, MI (Marriage Record 1) - (Register 1 Image) - (Marriage Record 2) - (Register 2 Image).
    • Thomas is not listed in the Irish index records that I initially found for this family, but the approximate date of birth which is listed as 1864 puts him at the very start of the civil records, a search through both the civil records and church records would be advised to establish a familial connection.
Parents:
Mary Lardner and John Barry
  • Annie E. Barry, dressmaker and daughter of Mary Lardner and John Barry died in Boston, MA.
    • Per the U.S. death record that has been located, Annie was born in approximately 1858 which would preclude her from being found in any civil index of births (civil record keeping began in 1864), but her baptism might be able to be found in the church registers of the period.  (Death Record) - (Image of Death Register Entry).
Parents:
Catherine (Kate) Lardner and Timothy Hanrahan
  • Nora Hanrahan married Cornelius Hassett in Manilla, IA and died in Denison, IA, both of these cities are located in Crawford County.
    • Nora was born around 1873 and was not found in my initial search through the indexed Irish records so she should be considered a "possible/probable" child of the couple.  In looking at the details of both the Marriage and Death entries found she is highly likely to be a descendant of Kate and Timothy. (Marriage Record) - (Death Record)
Parents:
John Lardner and Mary Wolfe
  • Anna M Lardner was the widow of Patrick Mahoney and died in Toledo, OH in 1940.
    • Per her U.S. death record, Anna was born about 1864 in County Clare, Ireland to a John Lardner and Mary Wolf  (Death Record) - (Image of Death Certificate).
    • Anna was not found in my initial Irish record search, but because of the approximated date of birth it is possible that she is not recorded in the civil register of births which began in 1864.  A search of the initial civil records and the church registers would be recommend to find certain confirmation of her familial link to John and Mary Lardner.
Parents:
Anne Lardner and John Conway
  • Mary Conway was born in approximately 1869 and was married to Patrick A. O'Connor.  According to the abbreviated index record of her death, she passed way in 1947 in Chicago, IL (Death Record).
  • The family page is now listed with Mary as a "possible/probable" child to Anne and John Conway because she was not found in my initial search, it would be suggested that both the civil and church records for the area and time be search again in order to find a direct connection to this Lardner/Conway family.  That being said, there is a Margaret Conway (born/baptized in 1868) that was found in the Irish index that may in fact be Mary, as it was not uncommon for the two names to be used in place of one another.

Lardner Family Pages - Marriage/Birth Index Searches

Below is a list of family pages that I have put together with various index searches I have completed on the Family Search website.  As with all indexes, it's best to go back to the original records to verify what is and isn't available in the records.  The entries, in most cases, may only contain information that would be helpful with a quick/basic search in a database and transcription errors may occur.

I will try to update the family pages as I find additional information, but please comment on the pages if you are a descendant of the family, it may help others in their searches!

Until Later,
Jessica

James Lardner's Will

In the process of doing my search, I had always heard that wills were basically non-existent prior to 1922, but that there might be indexed summaries of wills available.  Therefore, my first stop was FamilySearch.org website to see what records they may have available and voilĂ ...

Ireland, Calendar of Wills and Administrations, 1858-1920

Family Search Database

County Clare Lardners (and surname variations) found in will and admin index

Probate Name        Date of Death     Location                              Beneficiary
James Lardner       6 Mar 1912         Lisheencrona (Carrigholt)    John Lardner
Thomas Lardner    24 May 1913       Monmore (Kilrush)               Mary Lardner
James Larner      13 Jul 1883        Clounlaheen West            Catherine Larner

Even though the surname is not spelled the way my family has come to understand it, it was the Clounlaheen West location that had me looking at the entry with hope (below is partial transcription of what is listed in the index):

LARNER, James
Effects £51
"Letters of Administration (with the Will annexed) of the person estate of James Larner late of Clounlaheen West County Clare Farmer deceased who died 13 July 1883 at same place were granted at Limerick to Catherine Larner of Clounlaheen West aforesaid the Widow and the Principal Legatee."

Taking what I had understood about probate records (read the articles from the National Archives of Ireland and Family Search for assistance) I decided to order FHL film# 100947 for the Limerick District will books... and I was surprised to find a will for James Lardner Sr!

Dated 20th of February, 1883, the document stated that James had decided to disinherit all of his children he had with his first wife Bridget because of their lack of "obedience" and "subservience" to him.  Instead, he left his second wife Catherine Halloran Lardner (nĂ©e Breen) his worldly possessions after his death and the right to pass on that property to his step-daughter Mary Halloran when ever she so chose.  This transfer did take place between Catherine and Mary's husband, James Scullane, and is recorded in the General Valuation Revision lists of Kilrush Rural District (FHL film# 819460).

In addition to this disinheritance information, there followed a phrase that had me scratching my head in puzzlement over his relationship with his blood descendants.  Apparently, the children were disobedient enough that he had no other choice but, "...to help them to emigrate to foreign lands..." Which, OK, I'm not exactly sure how that logic works, but I decided to focus on the idea that all of the children had emigrated by 1883.

This fact may explain why I have been having such difficult time locating information on my 2x Gr-Grandfather's siblings in Ireland.  As a result, I now have a newly modified set of questions I need to answer about them: when did the children leave?, where did they go? and were they married with their own families when they emigrated?  The search continues!

Until next time.

Lardner Families Mapped

Over the past week, I've been a busy little bee doing general searches via the FamilySearch website in my spare time.  And surprisingly, I've gathered enough information at this point that I thought it would be beneficial to map out the family name in Clare and post the other various data that I've gathered on the families that I have found.

The dispersal of the name across Clare can be seen below, courtesy of the Clare GenMaps project available online at the website for the Clare County Library in Ennis.  Its an impressive tool that I think everyone should check out at least once.

James Lardner from the townland of Cloonlaheen West, Clare

...Last time... There was a possible ancestor spotting found in the records of Griffith's Evaluation of County Clare ...
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Separate from my own research, relatives of mine were also on a mission to find our family in Ireland and commissioned a genealogical report from the Clare Heritage & Genealogical Research Centre in Corofin.

Through the Heritage Centre's work, they were able to find seven separate baptismal entries for children who were born to a James Lardner and Bridget (O)Sullivan in Cloonlaheen West (Roman Catholic parish of Kilmurry Ibrickane, Diocese of Killaloe):
  • James, baptized on 2 January, 1840
  • John, baptized on 17 April, 1841
  • William, baptized on 4 February, 1843
  • Anne, baptized on 7 December, 1844
  • Michael, baptized on 19 July, 1846
  • Patrick, baptized on 23 July, 1848
  • Ellen, baptized on 1 July, 1850
Comparing the birth information gathered for the two known siblings, the above baptism dates in bold appear to correspond with my 2x great grandfather and aunt’s birth dates given as 1 January, 1840 and 1 July, 1850 respectively.  These individuals could be my family!  If I could, I would hug the person who put this report together.

Also included in the Centre's report was a copy of James Lardner Sr's 1883 death register record for the civil district of Cragaknock,Union of Kilrush.  According to this document, James died on 13 July, 1883 in Clonlaheen at the age of 80 which would place his year of birth around 1803.  His wife, who is listed as the informant of his death, was a woman by the name of Kate Lardner.

Per the Centre's report, Bridget (Sullivan) Lardner died sometime after 1850 and James married again, this time to a Catherine "Kate" (Breen) O'Halloran.  Marriage records were not included for the couple in the research, so I'm not sure where Catherine's information comes from, but apparently decedents of Catherine and her first husband, Thomas O'Halloran, still own the family property today.

As a result of this report, my next tasks will be to track down a microfilm copy of the church registers for Kilmurry Ibrickane in order to gather images of the baptism entries, while locating records for Bridget's death and James' subsequent marriage to Catherine.

Until later...

All the Best,
Jessica

James Lardner and Griffith's Valuation of County Clare

In my last POST I listed a number of leads gathered from my 2nd great-grandfather, James Lardner, that could be followed in order to expand the family search to the shores of Ireland.
Taking note of the birth information of the two Lardner children that came to the U.S., the first stop for my research was to go to the records for Griffith's Valuation to see how common the surname was in 19th century Ireland.  These records are accessible for free on the Ask About Ireland website.  In doing a quick search on the Lardner name, I found out something rather surprising...there were only eleven results and among those entries there was only one James Lardner.

I went back to did additional searches on variations of the Lardner name I had come across in my genealogical quest...and still the original search was the only one that pulled up any information.  So the question became, is the James listed my direct relative? and are the others listed also related to me?

Of course, the entry for James Lardner doesn't show any direct lineage information because of the type of record the land valuation was.  It does, however, give a clue to the living environment this particular James Lardner was surrounded with in about 1855 (when this valuation was published).

The record shows James Lardner as a tenant of Captain Francis Casey, living in the townland of Cloonlaheen West, parish of Kilmurry in County Clare.  With his leased property consisting of a house, offices, and land (approx. 14 acres), which had an estimated value of £3 5s. and was located west of the town of Mullagh and just north of Doolough.

If this was my great-great-great grandfather, I had just found the home place of my Lardner family! ... But, the local church records for the area needed to be searched in order to confirm that a certain James Larder (Jr) had been born there in and around the first day of January, 1840 to a couple by the names of James Lardner (Sr) and Bridget Sullivan.

Until next time...

All the Best,
Jessica

The Starting Point - The Lardner family of Jefferson County, Nebraska, USA

The starting point for my family's research on the Lardner surname in Ireland comes from my 2nd great-great-grandparents, James Lardner and Mary Ann Cashman of Jefferson County, Nebraska.

James was the first Lardner in my family to come to the United States from County Clare, having arrived in the country in April of 1862. By 1867, he had made his way from the East coast of the U.S. to the state of Iowa, where he married Mary Ann Cashman (Mary Ann had been born in Illinois and was the daughter of William and Mary Cashman of County Cork).

Eventually James and Mary made their way to Nebraska due to his work on the Burlington Railroad and in 1870 James applied for citizenship and had filed for a piece of farm land with the help of Homestead Act of 1862.  By March of 1871, the family had settled on what would be their permanent home in the precinct of Antelope in Jefferson County, Nebraska.  Together the couple raised a total of thirteen children and in 1909, James passed away at the age of 69 while attending mass at St. Michael's church in Fairbury, Nebraska.

So goes an extremely brief summary of some of the information gathered on James Lardner, the impetus for this particular blog.  As with all genealogy research, the quest for information that may help to expand the understanding of a distant relative's life is never ending. Some questions may have answers that are accessible...Where what the individual born?, Who are their parents?, Did they have siblings?  While others could be completely out of reach...What were they like? Were they funny? Serious? What kind of relationship did they have with their family?  But for some reason, for those who have caught the 'genealogy bug', the questions only push us to explore more and to expand the search.

I count myself among these individuals, which is the catalyst for my collection of blog entries and for this blog in particular because I have a number of facts that can be used to push my Lardner search forward:
  1. James's birth date is recorded as 1 January, 1840.  This date is not necessarily set in stone, as people who engage in Irish genealogy can attest, but it is a good point from which to work.
  2. James Lardner's parents are listed as James Lardner and Bridget Sullivan on his death certificate.
  3. Family tradition and various other sources list James' country/county of origin as County Clare, Ireland.
  4. James has one younger sister who is known to have also come to the United States, Ellen Lardner, wife of Michael (Mike) Hickey, who settled in Ottumwa, Iowa with her family.
With this information, a couple of cousins and I were able to move from conducting research on our family in the U.S. to those that can be discovered in Ireland.

Until later...

All the Best,
Jessica
