Will and Probate Records 1858-1888 (Part 1)

****UPDATED WITH LINKS TO INDIVIDUAL WILLS ON APRIL 2, 2016****

See Other "Will" Posts: Part 2, Part 3 - Under Construction

Hello Everyone,

I thought I would make a general entry about the available will and probate records that I have found online (please let me know if there are others so that the information can be shared).

On the FamilySearch.org site, they have made images from the "Ireland, Calendar of Wills and Administrations, 1858-1920" public.  These records, when filtered for the location of Clare, provides over 7,000 results: LINK.  Of course, I'm not listing them all here, but if you are interested you can add additional filters to the search which may assist with locating records on your family.  Please keep in mind, that the spellings of surnames come in a variety of forms, so make sure you try all of the possibilities you can come up with...  The record I was looking for came up under the name Larner, not Lardner.

-----

Below are the list of searches for known names associated with the surname Lardner, whose Letters of Adminstration and wills were filed and probated in Limerick between 1858-1888.

Please note, I didn't look for the multitude of variations possible for most of them, these are single searches on the most common form of the names unless otherwise noted.  If probate of the will was completed in Limerick and filed between 1858-1888, there is a possibility that you may be able to get a microfilm copy (see the microfilm links at the end of this post):

Sullivan's of Dunsallagh / Doonsallagh, Clare

Hello everyone!  In this entry I thought I would provide a possible little timeline breakdown of the Sullivans from Dunsallagh/Doonsallagh area based upon the residence of the baptism sponsors for the first two Lardner children in my family in 1840 and 1841.

Please be advised that the two forms of the townland name will be used interchangeably depending how the record in question spells the location.

---------------------
Per Google maps, it appears that Dunsallagh/Doonsallagh is relatively close to Cloonlaheen West where my Lardner family was from:

In the Tithe Applotment records for the year 1833, there are two Sullivan listed as living in Dunsallagh: John Sullivan and Tim Sullivan.  A short distance away, to the south, there is also listed a Lawrence Sullivan who is listed as residing in Killarnon (aka Killernan).

On the Clare Library's website there is a list of the 1834, "Recapitulated Tithe Applotment Book for the Parish of Kilmurry Ibrickan," where a John and Tim Sullivan are listed in Doonsallagh.

The next appearances in Dunsallagh come with my family's baptism sponsorships of  Patrick O'Sullivan in 1840 and then Peter and Mary Sullivan in 1841.

In the 1854/55 the Griffith Valuation records, a person can still find Sullivans in Doonsallagh and surrounding locations.  In fact a Peter Sullivan is still listed there, this time in Doonsallagh West more specifically.

Looking at the 1901 Irish Census a Sullivan family is shown as residing in Doonsallagh East, the head of this family of seven is Thady Sullivan. Included along side him in this group is his mother, the widow, Mary Sullivan.  It is possible that the Mary Sullivan is the wife of the aforementioned, Peter Sullivan, who together they could have been the couple from Dunsallagh that were recorded as sponsors of John Lardner.  At the approximate age of 80, Mary would have been in her early twenties when John was born.

Also listed in the 1901 Census is two O'Sullivan children, Norah and Thomas, who were living with their uncle Thomas Burke and their cousins in Doonsallagh East.

Ten years later, the 1911 Irish Census shows another Sullivan family of seven in Doonsallagh East, this time headed by a Timothy Sullivan (aka Thady?, his age and his wife Anne's age correspond to the 1901 census).
---------------------

If anyone has any connection to this Sullivan family let me know!  It would be interesting to see if we can't piece together how this branch of Sullivans are connected to the Lardners.

Jessica

Baptism Registry of James Lardner and Siblings.

Wooo hooo!  Quick update! I finally had a chance to look at the FHL microfilmed copy of the parochial registers for Kilmurry-Ibricken!

I must say that the results of my first foray with the records revealed a couple of interesting things.  First and foremost, I couldn't find any notation of James Lardner Sr and Bridget Sullivan in the registers until the baptism of my 2x great-grand father, James, in 1840.  The manuscripts themselves begin in April of 1839 and are therefore missing a couple of months from the first half of the year.  Secondly, when I compared the information that I already had to the information from the microfilm, I found some previously unknown facts...

----------
Known information:

  • Baptism: 2nd January, 1840
  • Child: James Lardner
  • Parents: James Lardner & Bridget O'Sullivan of Powerstown
  • Sponsors: Patrick O'Sullivan & Susan McInerey
-----

Information gathered from the microfilm (Register of Baptisms, Volume 1, page 40):

  • Baptism: 2nd January, 1840
  • Child: James Lardner
  • Parents: James Lardner & Bridget O'Sullivan of Powerstown
  • Sponsors: Patrick O'Sullivan of Dunsallagh in the parish of Miltown & Susan McInerey of Powerstown
  • Minister: E. P. Barry

----------

Operating on the idea that individuals with the same surname, who are listed on the baptism records as sponsors/witnesses, may be relations to the family....the fact that the microfilm offers a location of a O'Sullivan sponsor is incredibly exciting!

Also found on the film was a location for the sponsors of James' brother John, they were Peter and Mary Sullivan of Dunsallagh.  Unfortunately, there was no location information listed for the only other person that could have possibly have been a relative, Margaret Lardner, she was the sponsor of Patrick Lardner.

Moral of the story kids, go back the original source if possible (or a close facsimile), who knows what could be waiting for you!

Until Later,
Jessica

Sullivan (O'Sullivan) Name in County Clare - Tithe Applotments and Landed Estate Files

Hello Everyone!  I'm back after a vacation break with information on the Sullivan half of my Lardner familial equation.

As a refresher, my 3x great-grandfather was James Lardner and his first wife (and my 3x great-grandmother) was Bridget Sullivan/O'Sullivan.  Bridget died some time after 1850 and the birth of her last child, Ellen.

I have very little information to go on for my Sullivan branch other than Bridget's name and the possibility that she is related to a couple of her children's baptism sponsors: one of James Lardner's (2x great-grandfather) sponsors was Patrick O'Sullivan and John Lardner's sponsors were Peter and Mary Sullivan.  As a result, I did a search in the Tithe Applotment and Landed Estate record index to see if by chance there were any results...and boy were there.  There is a vast difference in the amount of Sullivans vs. Lardners in County Clare during the that time period.

Please follow the hyper-linked titles to see the entire list of results, as below I have only listed those entries where the physical locations of the individuals were relatively close to the Lardner family of Cloonlaheen West.
